Chapter 5 - The Resurrection of the Dead

A tall, striking woman in a dark trench coat walked into the dining room, her face pale, leaning heavily on the arm of a trusted Moretti enforcer. Her eyes were hollow, dark circles bruised beneath them, but her gaze locked immediately onto Valentina with the fury of a ghost returned from the grave.

Valentina staggered backward, her hands flying to her mouth. "No... that's impossible. The files... the death certificate..."

"My name is Clara," the woman said, her voice raspy, broken from hours of distress, but burning with absolute life. "And your uncle’s doctors are not as thorough as you think they are, Mrs. Moretti."

Rocco stood frozen. For the first time in his life, the impenetrable mafia boss looked entirely dismantled. He stared at Clara, then down at the baby sleeping in the corner, and finally back at the woman he thought he had lost forever.

"They drugged me," Clara explained, walking unsteadily toward the center of the room, her eyes fixed on Valentina. "Your uncle’s men injected me with a paralytic to simulate cardiac arrest during the C-section. They declared me dead before I even lost consciousness. But one of the junior nurses—a girl whose sister owes her life to Marco—swapped my medical file at the last second and smuggled me out through the laundry bay while the rest of the staff was distracted."

Valentina shook her head wildly. "It’s a trick! A setup! Rocco, you can't believe—"

"Shut up," Rocco commanded. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried the weight of an executioner's axe.

He walked past Valentina as if she were a ghost, kneeling down beside Clara. Gently, tenderly—a gesture no living soul had ever witnessed the ruthless mob boss perform—he reached out and touched her face, confirming she was real, warm, and breathing.

"They took my baby," Clara whispered, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "They told me he didn't survive."

"He's here," Rocco said softly, his voice thick with an emotion he hadn't felt in decades. He stood up, walked over to the corner where Sophia sat guarding the newborn, and gently lifted his son into his arms.

The baby whimpered softly, then settled against his father's broad chest, right over the heavy gold watch that had belonged to his grandfather.

Rocco turned around, holding his son like a shield and a sword. He looked at Lawrence Vance, who was quietly trying to slip his briefcase toward the door.

"Marco," Rocco said without looking away from Valentina and her co-conspirator.

"Boss?"

"Take Lawrence to the basement holding cells. Lock Valentina in the west wing master suite and post double guards at every exit. Nobody leaves. Nobody makes a phone call."

"And the hospital director?" Marco asked, his hand resting on his holster.

Rocco’s eyes turned pitch black. "Tell him the Moretti family debt is about to be paid in full."
