Chapter 6 - A Debt Paid in Blood

The basement of the Moretti estate smelled of damp stone, old wine casks, and raw fear. Lawrence Vance sat handcuffed to a steel chair under the harsh glare of a single overhead bulb. His tailored suit was wrinkled, his composure entirely shattered.

Rocco walked down the stone stairs, his heavy boots echoing in the enclosed space. He didn't carry a weapon; his presence alone was enough to make strong men beg for a quick death.

"Rocco—please," Lawrence stammered, pulling against the steel cuffs. "I was just following directives! Valentina’s family holds sway over half the judges in the district! If I hadn't filed those paperwork overrides, they would have disbarred me, ruined my practice, destroyed—"

"You swore an oath to the Moretti family," Rocco interrupted, his voice dangerously calm. He stopped two feet away from the lawyer, looking down at him as if he were an insect crawling across the floor. "Not to Valentina. Not to her uncle. To me. And you used your legal expertise to help bury my son in a garbage heap."

"It was an administrative maneuver! Nobody was supposed to die!" Lawrence shrieked, sweat pouring down his forehead. "Valentina promised she’d just send the child to an overseas adoption agency in Zurich! I swear to God, I didn't know they were going to dump him here!"

"An adoption agency?" A cold, humorless smile touched the corners of Rocco’s mouth. "You think shipping my bloodline off to strangers in Europe is a minor infraction?"

Before Lawrence could answer, Marco stepped forward out of the shadows, holding a thick manila folder and a flash drive.

"Boss, we hacked Lawrence’s off-site server," Marco reported, his expression grim. "He didn't just handle the hospital paperwork. He’s been skimming from Moretti shell companies for three years, funneling millions into accounts tied directly to Valentina’s uncle."

Lawrence’s face turned the color of ash. "That’s... that’s a forgery. You can't prove—"

"The encrypted ledger matches the Swiss bank transfers down to the cent," Marco interrupted, dropping the folder onto Lawrence’s lap. "You sold out the family for a retirement fund in the Cayman Islands."

Rocco stared at the lawyer for a long, agonizing moment. Then, without a word, he turned his back on him and walked toward the iron exit door.

"Marco. Make sure Lawrence retires permanently. As for Valentina's uncle, send a message to St. Helena Hospital. Tell him his medical license is revoked, effective immediately—along with his heartbeat."

As Rocco climbed the stone stairs back toward the upper floors, the sharp, definitive crack of a suppressed pistol echoed behind him in the basement. The trial was over. The verdict had been executed.
