Chapter 12 - Whispers Behind Bars

Two hundred miles away, inside the sterile, fluorescent-lit visiting room of the federal penitentiary, Valentina Moretti sat behind thick reinforced glass. Her hair was streaked with grey, her expensive silk robes long replaced by a coarse orange jumpsuit, but the cold ambition in her eyes remained entirely un-extinguished.

Sitting across from her was a young, ambitious defense attorney named Marcus Thorne—a man whose legal career had been quietly financed by the remnants of Valentina’s old political loyalists.

"You want me to reopen a sealed maternity registry from ten years ago?" Marcus asked, skimming through a thick manila folder. "Valentina, the judge who oversaw your original sentencing locked those files under national security-level classification. Even touching them could get me disbarred."

"You won't just touch them, Marcus; you're going to leak them," Valentina hissed, leaning close to the glass. "Rocco thinks he won. He thinks he built an impenetrable fortress with that stray maid's daughter advising him. But he forgot one detail: the second-born heir."

Marcus frowned, looking up from the documents. "Second-born? The files state only one child was involved—the boy Leo."

A chilling, triumphant smile crept across Valentina’s face. "The public files, yes. But my uncle kept a parallel ledger at St. Helena Hospital. There was a twin. A girl. Smuggled out the same night and placed with a proxy family in Sicily before Rocco's men locked down the city."

Marcus stared at her in disbelief. "If Rocco finds out he has another child out there—"

"He won't find her through normal channels," Valentina interrupted softly. "You are going to find her first. And when you bring her to my associates in Europe, we will have the ultimate leverage to tear the Moretti empire down from the inside out."
