Chapter 8 - The Fall of an Empire

By dawn, the Moretti estate was surrounded by federal agents and local law enforcement—not because Rocco was being arrested, but because the federal authorities had been handed a neatly gift-wrapped package containing twenty years of corruption, embezzlement, and conspiracy tied directly to Valentina’s family political dynasty.
Marco stood at the grand entrance as three unmarked black SUVs pulled up to the front steps. Two senior federal prosecutors walked out, accompanied by state police.
"Is Mr. Moretti ready?" the lead prosecutor asked, holding a warrant packet.
"Mr. Moretti is busy with his family," Marco replied smoothly, blocking the path to the main parlor. "However, the evidence you requested regarding the illegal hospital overrides, financial fraud, and embezzlement by Valentina Moretti and her associates is sitting on the oak desk in the study. Every digital trail, bank transfer, and signed confession is cataloged."
The prosecutor raised an eyebrow. "A confession?"
"Signed by Lawrence Vance before his unfortunate, sudden departure from our employ," Marco said with a deadpan expression. "You'll also find warrants for Valentina Moretti's uncle at St. Helena Hospital. He's currently being detained by local authorities for medical malpractice and conspiracy to commit murder."
Inside the master suite upstairs, Valentina paced the floor like a caged tigress. Her silk robe was wrinkled, her hair disheveled. She had pounded on the locked oak doors for hours until her fists were bruised, screaming threats about her family's political connections, district judges, and state senators.
The door clicked.
Valentina spun around, expecting her uncle’s legal team or a terrified servant. Instead, Rocco walked in alone. He didn't look angry. He looked profoundly disappointed—which was infinitely more terrifying.
"Rocco," she breathed, her voice dropping into a desperate, pleading tone. "You can't do this. You know what my family represents. If you hand me over to the authorities, the political backlash will destroy your shipping ports, your contracts, your entire syndicate—"
"My syndicate survived wars you couldn't even dream of, Valentina," Rocco interrupted calmly. He stopped a few feet away from her. "You thought marrying into the Moretti family made you a queen. But you forgot one fundamental rule of the underworld."
"What rule?" she hissed, backing up against the vanity.
"Never touch the bloodline," Rocco said softly. "You tried to throw my son in a trash heap like garbage. For that, your family name won't just be ruined—it will be erased from history."
Before she could scream, two federal agents stepped into the room behind Rocco, their hands resting on their cuffs.

"Valentina Moretti," the lead agent said, holding up the arrest warrant. "You are being charged with conspiracy to commit murder, financial fraud, and abduction."
As the cold steel cuffs clicked around her wrists, Valentina stared past the agents at her husband. Rocco didn't blink. He turned his back on her, walking out of the room without looking back once.
