Chapter 11 - The Phantom Shareholder

The grand re-launch gala of Aegis Global Enterprises was designed to signal a complete break from the past, a glittering night of black-tie elegance held in the newly renovated grand ballroom of the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. Crystal chandeliers caught the amber light of a hundred celebratory flutes, and the city’s elite—politicians, philanthropists, and newly vetted executives—mingled beneath soaring ceilings. I stood near the private terrace doors, wearing a custom midnight-blue velvet gown that swept the floor, feeling the quiet hum of absolute control vibrating through the room.

Brandon stood beside me, looking sharp in a tailored tuxedo, a genuine smile touching his eyes for the first time in over a year. He raised his glass slightly toward me.

"To new beginnings, CEO Vance," Brandon murmured with a soft, affectionate grin. "If anyone had told me two years ago we’d be standing here owning the entire enterprise free and clear of the vultures, I would have had them committed."

"We earned every brick of this foundation, Brandon," I replied, clinking my flute against his. "Never forget what it took to get us here."

Our quiet moment was interrupted by the urgent buzz of my secure corporate smartphone vibrating against my palm. I excused myself, stepping out onto the cool, secluded terrace where the Denver skyline glittered like a sea of fallen stars. I swiped the screen open, expecting a standard operational report from Catherine.

Instead, the screen flickered, bypassing the regular interface, and displayed a raw, encrypted command-line feed from our internal network security division.

Warning: Unauthorized proxy access detected on Tier-1 voting ledger.

My breath hitched. The encryption protocols we had installed after Marcus’s arrest were impenetrable—military-grade firewalls designed to trigger immediate lockdown upon any external breach. Yet, the data stream wasn't coming from outside the firewall. It was pulsing quietly from an internal, offline vault located deep within the original corporate archives beneath the old Vance building—a subterranean vault that was supposed to have been permanently sealed and decommissioned by federal order.

"Catherine," I spoke directly into the encrypted line, my voice dropping into an ice-cold register. "Are you seeing the Tier-1 ledger spike?"

There was a tense, agonizing pause on the other end of the line before Catherine’s voice came back, breathless and trembling.

"Elena... I'm looking at the registry now. Someone is executing a hostile transfer of voting shares using an override key that only existed on paper fifty years ago. An override belonging to the original founder... our grandfather."

May you like

My mind raced. Marcus and Arthur had claimed they were the sole heirs, but the data stream scrolling across my phone screen proved otherwise. There was a third branch of the family tree—one that had been deliberately amputated, buried alive, and completely erased from every official registry.

And whoever held that key wasn't just trying to steal the company back. They were coming for me.
