Chapter 5 - The Inheritance

Three weeks later, the glass-walled boardroom of Vance Global Enterprises felt entirely different. The air was lighter, purged of the toxic sycophants who had propped up Arthur Vance’s corrupt regime. The board had been entirely restructured. Arthur was awaiting trial under house arrest, his shares forfeited to cover restitution, while Julian sat in a federal holding facility facing a projected twelve-year sentence without the possibility of early parole.
I sat at the head of the table, reviewing the final corporate consolidation audit. My lawyer, a sharp woman named Catherine Vance—unrelated to the corrupt branch of the family—slid a fresh document across the mahogany wood.
"The federal health board completed their investigation into the fertility tampering," Catherine said softly, watching me with empathetic eyes. "The pharmaceutical blockers were completely flushed from your system within two weeks of stopping them. Your health is fully restored, Elena. Medically speaking, there are no long-term impediments if you ever choose to have a family in the future."
I touched my flat abdomen, feeling a sudden rush of complex emotions—grief for the years stolen from me, but an overwhelming surge of fierce, unyielding freedom. I was no longer the woman who adjusted her life around a narcissist’s lies. I was the sole majority owner and Chief Executive Officer of one of the largest conglomerates in the country.
"Thank you, Catherine," I replied steadily. "File the final paperwork to rebrand the subsidiary holdings under the original family trust. And make sure the scholarship foundation we established is funded entirely out of Arthur and Julian's seized personal assets."

"Done," Catherine smiled, packing her briefcase. "By the way, your brother Brandon called. He’s taking a sabbatical, traveling through Europe to clear his head, and he wanted me to tell you he's never been prouder of you."
I smiled back, feeling the last remaining shadows of my past marriage lift completely.
