Chapter 13 - The Heir of Shadows

The name hung in the damp, freezing air of the subterranean vault like a physical blow.

Julian Vance Jr.

My mind scrambled through the timeline, frantically piecing together the hidden puzzles of my late husband’s double life. Julian Sr. had always claimed to have no children from his past relationships—a lie told to keep his succession claims clean and uncontested. But looking at the young man standing before us, the striking resemblance was unmistakable. He was a carbon copy of Julian, but with a sharper, more calculating edge that his father had always lacked.

Brandon stepped forward, his fists clenched, his voice trembling with righteous fury. "You're lying. Julian didn't have any other children. The background checks during the merger audit were absolute."

Julian Jr. let out a low, mocking chuckle, sliding his hands casually into the pockets of his trench coat.

"Background checks only show what people want you to see, Uncle Brandon," Julian Jr. replied, his eyes locking onto mine with chilling amusement. "My father fathered me during his university years with a woman your precious family paid off and banished to Europe. I was raised in London, trained from childhood by my great-uncle Marcus, and groomed for one single purpose: to reclaim the Vance empire the moment the weak links broke."

I kept my hand steady on my firearm, leveling the barrel squarely at his chest, though my mind was racing to process the strategic implications of his words.

"Marcus and Arthur are locked in maximum-security federal cells," I said coldly, my voice cutting through the damp chill of the room. "You have no legal standing, no corporate authority, and no allies left. Whatever data you're trying to siphon from this terminal will be wiped the moment my security protocol registers your presence."

Julian Jr. didn't flinch. Instead, he reached down slowly, pressed a single key on the glowing terminal, and smiled.

"My dear stepmother... you think federal prison walls can stop a trust established across three international offshore jurisdictions? My father and great-uncle were merely the foot soldiers. I am the architect."

He stepped aside, gesturing toward the main monitor. On the screen, a real-time financial mapping software displayed the global assets of Aegis Global. But instead of showing stability, thousands of red data packets were rapidly eating away at our subsidiary accounts, rerouting billions of dollars into a hidden shell corporation registered under a terrifyingly familiar name: Vance-Cain Holdings.

"Look closely, Elena," Julian Jr. whispered, his voice dropping into a dangerous purr. "While you were busy celebrating your grand gala upstairs, every single controlling share of Aegis Global was legally transferred to my personal trust through a loophole in your father’s original pre-incorporation charter. Legally... you are no longer the majority owner."
