Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Leverage

I didn't lower the gun. My grip remained iron-clad, my breathing slow and controlled.

"If Julian was your Trojan horse," I said, my voice cutting through the quiet room like broken glass, "then you must be devastated to watch him rot in a federal cell while I liquidate every asset your precious family ever stole."

Marcus’s predatory smile didn't fade; instead, it widened into something dark and amused.

"Oh, Elena... you really think Julian was my only piece on the board?"

He reached into his leather briefcase, pulled out a thick, yellowed manila folder different from the ones I had seized at the office, and tossed it onto the bed.

"Open it. It’s the real reason your father died of a 'sudden heart attack' five years ago, right before you inherited his controlling shares."

My stomach gave a violent lurch. My father’s sudden death had always haunted me. The autopsy report had blamed natural causes, but the grief had left me vulnerable enough for Julian to step in, play the knight in shining armor, and slowly isolate me from my support system.

I didn't drop my gun, but with my left hand, I reached down, flipped open the folder, and scanned the medical and forensic documents inside.

Photographs of my father’s private study. Toxicological reports showing high levels of a rare, undetectable cardiac glycoside. And signed payout receipts transferring millions of dollars from a dummy corporation directly to Arthur Vance... and a secondary beneficiary named Marcus Vance.

"They murdered him," I whispered, the words catching in my throat as the full, horrific architecture of the conspiracy locked into place around me.

"Arthur lacked the stomach for the heavy lifting," Marcus said smoothly, taking another step closer. "He wanted wealth; I wanted total annihilation and rebirth. And now, you’ve handed me the ultimate gift. By cleaning house, firing the corrupt board, and consolidating all voting shares under your sole personal name, you didn't destroy our empire, Elena..."

He paused, his eyes gleaming with psychotic triumph.

"...you centralized every single voting share of Vance Global into one single target. If I make you sign over your power of attorney at gunpoint tonight, the entire multi-billion-dollar conglomerate becomes mine legally, cleanly, and permanently."

From the shadows behind the balcony door, a second figure stepped into the room—a burly, silent man holding a heavy industrial stun baton, his eyes fixed entirely on me.
