Chapter 14 - The Counter-Strike

Panic was a luxury I refused to afford. Every fiber of my training as a Chief Financial Officer—and every ounce of survival instinct I had forged over the past agonizing year—screamed at me to look past the illusion and find the flaw in his architecture.

"A pre-incorporation charter loophole?" I asked, my voice suddenly calm, almost dismissive, as I stepped closer to the glowing terminal. "Julian Jr., you studied my father’s business files very carefully, didn't you?"

Julian’s confident smirk flickered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a momentary flash of unease. "The paperwork doesn't lie, Elena. The transfer is legally binding."

"The paperwork does lie," I fired back, stepping directly into his personal space, ignoring the warning glare in his eyes. "Because my father amended the corporate charter three months before he died—a secret amendment notarized by federal magistrate Judge Harrison, specifically designed to nullify any legacy claims from unregistered or exiled bloodline heirs."

I pulled my secure corporate tablet from my coat pocket, tapped the glass twice, and shoved it directly into his chest.

"Take a look at the timestamp, junior," I said smoothly. "That amendment was filed with the federal registry five minutes before your offshore trust executed its transfer script. Which means your entire digital heist is classified as an automated corporate intrusion and grand larceny."

Before Julian Jr. could react, the heavy steel doors behind us groaned. Heavy tactical boots thundered down the concrete stairs once more, but this time, they weren't local police. Federal Marshals in full riot gear swarmed the vault, weapons raised and safety catches snapping off in unison.

"Julian Vance Jr., you are under arrest for corporate espionage, international wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit industrial sabotage," the lead marshal declared, stepping forward and clamping heavy steel cuffs around the young man’s wrists before he could reach for the terminal.

Julian thrashed against the officers, his polished veneer completely shattering as the cold reality of handcuffs bit into his skin. He glared at me with absolute hatred, his voice venomous as they dragged him toward the exit.

"This isn't over, Elena! You can't lock away an entire legacy!"

"Watch me," I whispered, turning my back on him as the heavy vault doors finally swallowed his screams.
