Chapter 4 - The Surgical Extraction

Four miles away, Saint Anthony Medical Center was ground zero for a media circus that no public relations firm could spin.

By noon, local news vans had parked outside the emergency entrance, tipped off by an anonymous source—courtesy of my private investigator—about a high-profile corporate executive and his mistress trapped together in a bizarre medical quarantine due to industrial adhesive poisoning. Photographers pressed their long lenses against the glass doors, eager to catch a glimpse of Julian Vance and Serena in their humiliating predicament.

Inside Recovery Room 4B, the atmosphere was considerably less glamorous.

The specialized solvent doctors had flown in from a chemical engineering lab in Chicago was finally working its magic, but the physical and psychological toll was absolute agony. Julian, pale, sweat-soaked, and groggy from localized anesthesia, blinked against the harsh fluorescent lights. Standing beside his bed was not his legal wife, but two local police detectives holding a pair of gleaming steel handcuffs.

"Julian Vance?" the lead detective asked, flipping open a badge. "You are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and domestic endangerment."

Julian tried to bolt upright, only to wince as the remaining adhesive pulled painfully against his skin. "This is a mistake! My wife—Elena—she set this up! She’s framing me!"

"Your wife is currently sitting in your executive chair on the 40th floor liquidating your assets," the detective replied flatly, reading him his Miranda rights. "You'll have plenty of time to explain your innocence to a federal judge."

Serena, occupying the adjoining hospital bed with privacy curtains half-drawn, was sobbing hysterically. Her husband, Brandon, stood at the foot of her bed, looking not with rage, but with a profound, chilling indifference. He held a signed separation agreement and a single packed suitcase containing her belongings.

"Brandon, please," Serena choked out, her face stained with tears and residual chemical burns. "Julian forced me into it! He threatened to cut off my brother's business loans if I didn't comply!"

Brandon didn't raise his voice. He didn't yell, curse, or throw anything. He simply looked at the woman he had loved for eight years as if she were a total stranger.

"Serena, my lawyer will drop the divorce papers at your mother's house in Boulder," Brandon said quietly. "Don't ever contact me, my family, or Elena again."

He turned on his heel and walked out of the room, leaving her alone in the sterile hospital ward as the police officers moved in to secure Julian’s transfer to the county detention center. The grand life they had built on deceit, manipulation, and greed had collapsed in less than twelve hours.
