Chapter 13 - THE BETRAYAL WITHIN THE GATES

While Richard and Marina processed the earth-shattering revelation in the main office, a dark, calculated drama was unfolding down by the private beach. Peter and Luna were playing tag near the water's edge, their bright laughter echoing over the gentle roll of the surf.

Watching them from the shadows of the pool house was Captain Sam Brooks, the trusted veteran sea captain of the Golden Hour.

Sam’s radio crackled with a low, distorted signal. He pulled a burner phone from his pocket and answered quietly.

"The girl’s identity has been compromised," a synthesized voice spoke from the earpiece. "The old nurse talked. Vance wants the girl brought to the private airstrip in the Everglades by midnight. Deliver her, and your offshore accounts in the Caymans double."

Sam hesitated for a fraction of a second, staring at Luna building a sandcastle with Peter. Greed and deep-seated resentment—born from years of watching Richard amass a multi-billion-dollar empire while he remained a hired hand—poisoned his conscience.

"Done," Sam whispered into the burner. "Keep the chopper idling at the south hangar. I’ll bring her alone."

Sam slipped a small, odorless chemical sedative vial from his pocket, pouring a few drops into a fresh juice box he had prepared earlier. He walked out toward the children with a warm, grandfatherly smile plastered across his face.

"Hey there, kids! You must be thirsty after all that running," Sam called out, holding out the juice box toward Luna.

Luna smiled innocently, taking the box without a second thought. "Thanks, Captain Sam!"
