Chapter 14 - THE MIDNIGHT ABDUCTION

Ten minutes later, the illusion of safety shattered completely.

Richard walked back out to the patio to check on the children, only to find Peter sitting alone on a beach towel, looking confused and rubbing his eyes.

"Peter? Where is Luna?" Richard asked sharply, his paternal instincts flaring instantly.

"Captain Sam took her," Peter mumbled, blinking sleepily. "He said they were going to look at a sea turtle nest down by the rocks. But she looked really... really sleepy."

Richard’s heart dropped into his stomach. He sprinted toward the rocky cove at the edge of the property. There was no sea turtle nest. Only a set of fresh ATV tire tracks leading straight out toward the private access road where an unmarked black van had been idling moments before.

He whipped out his satellite phone, dialing Marcus with terrifying urgency. "Marcus! Code Red! Captain Sam has abducted Luna! They’re heading toward the Everglades airstrip! Stop them by any means necessary!"

Inside the roaring engine of the black van, Sam gripped the steering wheel with sweaty palms, glancing back into the cargo area. Luna was slumped unconscious against the seat, the sedative having taken full effect within minutes.

"Hold on, kid," Sam muttered to himself, trying to justify his treason. "You’re going back to family. Big, wealthy family."

Suddenly, the night sky lit up as two armored security SUVs roared around a tight curve on the Tamiami Trail, their high-beam headlights blinding Sam and forcing him to slam on his brakes. The van skidded sideways across the asphalt, smoking rubber filling the humid night air.

Marcus vaulted out of the lead SUV, his tactical weapon drawn and leveled straight at Sam’s windshield. "Cut the engine, Sam! Step out with your hands behind your head, or we open fire!"
