Chapter 6 - THE SAFE HOUSE IN THE KEYS

By midnight, Richard had moved Marina, Peter, and Luna out of their Fort Lauderdale estate and into a heavily fortified private beachfront safe house tucked away in the Florida Keys, guarded by a rotating detail of retired Navy SEALs arranged by Marcus.

The ocean rolled gently against the private white-sand beach outside, casting soft silver moonlight across the living room.

Marina sat on the sofa, staring blankly at a cup of untouched tea, still haunted by the image of the C4 charge displayed on the police tablet.

Richard walked in from the patio, his satellite phone pressed to his ear. He clicked the call closed, rubbing his temples with a hand that wouldn't stop shaking.

"Who was that on the phone?" Marina asked softly, looking up.

"Federal intelligence," Richard said, sitting down beside her and taking her hand. "Arthur didn't act alone. The Zurich syndicate he mentioned—it’s fronted by a man named Viktor Vance, an international shipping cartel leader who has been trying to break our monopoly on the East Coast for three years."

"And Arthur’s arrest?"

"It spooked them," Richard replied grimly. "Intelligence intercepted a encrypted dark-web communication originating from Zurich ten minutes ago. A contract has been issued. One million dollars for anyone who eliminates the Sterling family before the federal grand jury indicts Vance next week."

Marina’s breath hitched. "My God, Richard... we aren't safe anywhere. Not here, not in our home, not even behind guards."

"We are safe as long as I'm breathing," Richard vowed, pulling her close.

Across the room, sitting cross-legged on a plush Persian rug, Luna was quietly coloring in a sketchpad Peter had given her. She looked up, her big green eyes reflecting the warm glow of the lamps.

"Mr. Sterling?" she asked timidly.

Richard walked over and knelt beside her. "What is it, Luna?"

"The tall man with the scar," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "The one who put the box under the boat. When he walked away... he dropped something in the sand near the dock pilings. I didn't tell the police because I was scared they'd yell at me for snooping."

Richard’s heart leaped. "What did he drop, Luna?"

"A silver key," she said, pulling a worn piece of string from her pocket with a small, heavy brass-and-silver skeleton key dangling from it. She had kept it hidden in her hem all along. "It had numbers stamped on it. Like a locker key."

Richard took the key from her small hand. Stamped neatly into the metal were three digits: 408.

And beneath them: MARINA BAY STORAGE.
