Chapter 16 - THE CARTEL'S MASTERSTROKE

Richard stood frozen, cradling the sleeping form of little Luna tightly against his chest with one arm, while his other hand slowly slid toward the legal firearm holstered inside his jacket.
"You're a monster, Viktor," Richard spat, his voice echoing across the silent tarmac. "She's your own flesh and blood. You murdered her parents, and now you want to use her as a human shield?"
"Blood is just a currency, Sterling. And right now, my account is overdrawn," Viktor laughed coldly, tightening his finger on the trigger. "Drop the gun, or I turn you both into Swiss cheese right here on the runway."
Before Richard could draw his weapon, the sound of heavy rotor blades tore through the swamp night.
A massive U.S. Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopter plunged out of the low cloud cover, descending rapidly directly over the charter plane, kicking up a hurricane-force gale of wind and dust that sent Viktor staggering backward.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapons!" a booming voice amplified through the helicopter's external speakers roared across the airstrip.
Simultaneously, four tactical vehicles smashed through the opposite end of the perimeter fence, blinding the cartel pilot with high-intensity tactical floodlights.
Viktor cursed furiously, realizing his escape route had vanished. He lunged forward, grabbing Captain Sam by the collar as a human shield. "Get us to the cockpit, you idiot! We take off now!"
But Sam—realizing he had been played as a disposable pawn by the cartel all along—snapped. He shoved Viktor hard, drawing a hidden pocketknife and slashing blindly. "I'm not dying for you, you lunatic!"
In the chaos of the scuffle, Viktor raised his submachine gun to fire—
BANG.

A single, crisp tactical shot rang out from the sniper perch of an armored federal vehicle.
Viktor’s weapon slipped from his fingers. He stumbled backward, clutching his shoulder, and collapsed hard onto the concrete tarmac as federal agents swarmed the area in a synchronized wave of tactical gear, slapping steel handcuffs onto both him and the traitorous Captain Sam.
