Chapter 11 - The Phantom Shadow

The applause from the ballroom gala had barely faded when a confidential alert flickered across my private tablet. While the world saw only a pristine corporate empire, the digital undercurrents of the financial sector never slept.

My chief security architect, Marcus, stood quietly beside the marble pillar, his face etched with a grim professional focus.

"Ms. Sterling," Marcus murmured, lowering his voice as the orchestra struck up a soft waltz. "Our perimeter defense algorithms just flagged an anomalous data breach attempt originating from an IP address routed through a federal penitentiary facility upstate."

I took a slow sip of sparkling water, my eyes narrowing slightly. "Carter? I thought his communication privileges were entirely restricted under the maximum security protocols of his sentencing."

"They are officially," Marcus replied, sliding a secure data pad into my hands. "Which is why it’s fascinating. Someone on the outside is using an encrypted proxy to tunnel past the prison's firewall. They aren't trying to steal proprietary code, Samantha. They’re probing the legacy backdoor keys we established during the startup days—the very ones Carter thought only he knew."

A cold, calculating satisfaction settled in my chest. Even behind bars, stripped of his dignity and designer suits, the pathetic parasite still believed he could outsmart the machine that birthed him.

"Let him knock, Marcus," I said softly, handing the tablet back with a lethal smile. "Open a honeypot server. Feed him simulated access codes to a defunct subsidiary account with zero balance. Let him think he’s clawing his way back to power right up until the moment federal prosecutors notice the unauthorized digital signature."

Marcus chuckled darkly. "Consider it done. Shall I have the warden notified immediately?"

"Not yet," I replied, watching the swirling couples on the dance floor. "Let him hang himself with his own digital rope first."
