Chapter 7 - The Apex AcquisitionWhile Carter’s world turned to ash, the boardrooms of Sterling Global Assets hummed with vibrant, unstoppable energy.

I sat at the head of the massive, custom-built teakwood conference table, flanked by my legal team and chief financial advisors. On the wall-mounted digital display, the live ticker for Apex Dynamics—the very company Carter had tried to acquire using my credit—flashed green.

"The acquisition of Apex is fully finalized, Ms. Sterling," the chief acquisitions officer announced, sliding a pristine leather-bound folder across the table toward me. "Their entire research division has formally transitioned under our direct patent portfolio. Furthermore, their board has unanimously voted to offer you the permanent position of Chief Executive Officer and Chairperson of the newly consolidated global conglomerate."

I opened the folder, my fingers tracing the embossed corporate seal of the new entity: Apex-Sterling Global.

"Thank you, David," I said calmly, looking around the room at the brilliant, dedicated executives who actually respected talent, loyalty, and hard work rather than arrogant posturing. "Let’s issue a press release immediately announcing our new green-energy infrastructure initiatives. We have an industry to rebuild."

Just as I signed the final legal document transferring all remaining Sterling Tech patents permanently into the new parent corporation, my secure private phone vibrated on the desk.

It was an unknown, restricted number.

I stared at it for a moment before pressing speakerphone and sliding it toward the center of the table.

"Samantha?"

Carter’s voice sounded hollow, broken, and desperate—barely resembling the booming, confident tone of the man who had ordered me to the back of the plane just a week ago.

"Please... Sam, I’m begging you," he choked out, the sound of heavy traffic and rushing wind audible in the background. "I’m standing outside the federal courthouse. They’re pressing criminal charges for corporate embezzlement and fraudulent asset inflation. If you don't drop the lawsuits, I’m facing twenty years in federal prison. Please... we were husband and wife. Have some mercy."

The entire boardroom went dead silent. Every eye turned toward me, waiting to see how the woman who had been discarded so callously would respond to the man begging for his life at the bottom of the cliff.
