Chapter 8 - The Final VerdictI leaned back slowly in my executive chair, letting the silence stretch for several long, agonizing seconds before I spoke.

"Mercy, Carter?" I asked, my voice smooth, even, and utterly devoid of warmth. "When you told me to 'know my place' on that jet, did you show mercy? When you invited your secretary into my seat and mocked my intelligence in front of your entire staff, did you consider our marriage?"

"I was arrogant!" Carter sobbed over the line, the sound of his dignity completely dissolving into pathetic whimpers. "I was stupid! I thought I was invincible! But you... you destroyed everything I ever built in forty-eight hours!"

"You didn't build it, Carter," I corrected gently. "I did. You merely rented the spotlight for a few years, and you proved yourself utterly unworthy of the stage."

"Samantha, please! What do you want from me?!" he wailed, a car horn blaring loudly in the background. "Do you want me to crawl? Do you want me to beg on my knees in front of the whole world?"

"No, Carter," I replied, my gaze fixed out the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glittering Manhattan skyline where my empire stretched as far as the eye could see. "I don't want you to crawl. I want you to experience exactly what you planned for me: absolute, crushing insignificance."

With a swift, decisive tap of my finger, I disconnected the call.

Julian, sitting across the table, raised his coffee mug toward me with a slight, approving smirk. "Brutal. I love it."

"It’s not brutality, Julian," I said, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket as the morning sunlight caught the diamond ring on my left hand—the one I had designed myself. "It’s simply gravity."
