Chapter 13 - The Digital NooseBack at the downtown headquarters of Apex-Sterling Global, the security monitoring station erupted into a flurry of silent, flashing amber lights.

"He took the bait, Ms. Sterling," Marcus announced, standing before a wall of multi-monitor displays that tracked the incoming data stream in real time. "The prisoner just injected the legacy backdoor key into our honeypot server. He’s attempting an unauthorized override of corporate liquidity channels."

I walked slowly toward the primary terminal, my heels clicking rhythmically against the polished concrete floor. On the screen, a line of foreign code blinked aggressively as it tried to breach the simulated firewall.

"Trace the signal back to its physical origin," I commanded calmly.

"Already done," Marcus grinned, tapping a final sequence on his keyboard. "The ping originates directly from contraband cellular hardware registered inside Cell Block Delta, Sector 4 of Greenstone Federal Penitentiary. We have the exact GPS coordinates and the device ID."

"Send the digital forensic report and the real-time interception logs straight to the federal warden and the district attorney's office," I instructed, adjusting the cuffs of my blazer. "Contraband possession inside a federal facility, combined with an active cyber-attack on a critical national infrastructure asset. Let’s see how many extra decades that adds to his stay."

"It’ll be a clean sweep," Marcus noted admiringly. "He’ll be transferred to a maximum-security isolation unit where he won't even see sunlight for the next twenty years."

I turned away from the monitors, looking out toward the sparkling skyline. Carter was desperately trying to burn my house down with a match he had struck inside a gas chamber. He had chosen his own executioner long before he ever walked onto that private jet.
