Chapter 4 - The Tarmac TrapThe emergency landing at Sector 4 regional airfield was anything but graceful. Brakes smoking and engines whining in protest, the multimillion-dollar chartered jet taxied to a halt in a remote, windswept corner of the tarmac, far away from the VIP hangars.

Inside the cabin, pandemonium had completely replaced corporate arrogance. Executives were screaming into dead cell phones, trying in vain to reach investors who had already been tipped off by automated risk-assessment algorithms.
Carter shoved his way down the aisle, his designer suit rumpled, his face mottled with purple rage. He threw open the main cabin door, expecting to find ground crew ready to kiss his feet.
Instead, he found two armed federal marshals and a team of court-appointed bailiffs standing at the base of the metal stairs, flanked by my personal legal counsel, Attorney Vance.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Carter roared, stepping down the stairs and jabbing a finger toward the chief marshal. "Do you know who I am? I am Carter Sterling, CEO of Sterling Technologies! We are in the middle of a multi-million dollar acquisition! Stand down this instant or I’ll have your badges!"
Attorney Vance stepped forward, holding out a thick stack of bound legal documents wrapped in crimson ribbons.
"Mr. Sterling, you are no longer the CEO of anything," Vance said, his voice echoing across the empty tarmac. "By order of the New York State Supreme Court, acting on behalf of the primary trust holder and sole patent proprietor, Samantha Sterling, your company has been placed into immediate receivership. All corporate assets, bank accounts, real estate holdings, and intellectual properties are hereby seized to satisfy an unpaid debt of 1.5 billion dollars, plus statutory penalties."
Carter staggered backward as if he had been physically struck, his hands trembling as he stared at the papers. "That’s... that’s impossible. Samantha doesn't have that kind of money! Her family is just—she’s just a spoiled socialite!"
"A socialite?" A cool, calm voice cut through the howling wind across the runway.

I stepped out from behind the black-tinted windows of a waiting Rolls-Royce Phantom, my tailored white trench coat billowing slightly in the breeze. My expression was an absolute mask of aristocratic detachment.
"Carter," I said softly, walking up the tarmac steps until I stood mere inches away from him. "Did you really think my father’s venture capital fund was just a bottomless charity for untalented husbands?"
