Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the MachineBack on the ground, inside the sleek, minimalist penthouse office of my family’s legal headquarters in downtown Manhattan, the ambient glow of six curved monitors illuminated my face.

My brother, Julian—a ruthless corporate litigator who had spent four years biting his tongue every time Carter patronized me at family dinners—swiveled his leather chair toward me, a predatory grin spreading across his face.

"Protocol Zero execution confirmed, sis," Julian said, tapping a key on his mechanical keyboard. "Every single intellectual property right associated with the thirteen foundational patents has been legally severed from Sterling Tech and reverted back to its original creator: you. Furthermore, the 1.5 billion-dollar bridge loan your trust extended to bail out his failing startup three years ago? It matured at noon today. We’ve just filed an immediate demand for full repayment, backed by a court-ordered receivership."

I crossed my legs, swirling a cup of green tea as I watched the live telemetry feed of Carter’s private jet on a secondary display. The aircraft had just received an automated divert command from the Federal Aviation Administration, forcing it to reverse course and land at the nearest municipal airstrip under emergency asset-seizure protocols.

"He thought he built an empire," I murmured, watching the little red dot on the radar map begin a sharp, panicked U-turn over the ocean. "He forgot that an empire built on borrowed bricks collapses the moment the foundation pulls its support."

"Mother is calling me every two minutes," Julian laughed, his phone buzzing endlessly on the desk. "She’s screaming about how you've ruined the family name, how Carter is a genius who will bounce back in a week. Shall I answer?"

"Send her straight to voicemail," I replied coldly. "Let them land first. I want to see the exact moment reality crashes down on them."
