Chapter 11 - Whispers in Atlanta

While peace settled over the Savannah community center, the corporate offices of Whitfield Systems in Atlanta were still vibrating aftershocks from Jonathan Vance’s federal indictment.
Maris Klein sat at her executive desk on the fiftieth floor, reviewing the quarterly security audits. The fallout from Jonathan’s embezzlement ring had forced a complete restructuring of the company’s internal compliance teams.
The intercom on her desk buzzed.
“Maris,” Marcus’s voice came through crisp and clear from his remote office in Savannah. “Are the compliance reports ready for the SEC filing?”
“Final drafts are printing now,” Maris answered. Then she paused, her tone shifting slightly. “There is one more thing you should know. A representative from Vanguard Holdings—one of the old proxy investment firms your former board members used—has been sniffing around our regional accounts.”
A cold silence hung over the line for a few seconds.
“Vanguard?” Marcus asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. “I thought we liquidated their holdings six months ago after Arthur Pendelton went down.”

“So did I,” Maris replied grimly. “It seems they left a dormant shell company registered in Delaware under a pseudonym. They’re trying to block our acquisition permits for the new community tech labs in three southern districts.”
Marcus’s jaw tightened. “They want a war? Let’s give them an audit they’ll never recover from. Freeze every asset tied to that shell company, and prepare a subpoena for whoever is pulling the strings.”
