Chapter 6 - The Corporate Vipers

While peace settled over the Reyes household in Savannah, three hundred miles away in Atlanta, a storm was brewing in the glass-walled headquarters of Whitfield Systems.
Jonathan Vance, senior vice president of operations and Marcus’s presumptive successor, paced the length of the executive boardroom. Spread across the mahogany table were leaked financial transcripts and frantic emails from corporate reporters.
“Are you telling me,” Jonathan shouted at Maris Klein, who stood calmly by the projector screen, “that Marcus canceled a three-billion-dollar acquisition meeting in New York to drive a waitress and her kid back to Savannah?!”
“He didn't just drive them, Jonathan,” Maris replied coolly, adjusting her glasses. “He cleared their entire estate liability, established a multi-million-dollar educational trust, and has officially appointed Elena Reyes as director of the new philanthropic initiative.”
Jonathan’s face flushed a furious, mottled red. “He’s lost his mind! The board has been looking for any excuse to invoke the mental incapacitation clause and strip him of his CEO voting shares. If we push an emergency shareholder vote while he’s distracted by a childhood ghost, we can take control of the company before the end of the week!”

Maris crossed her arms, a dangerous, knowing smile touching the corners of her lips.
“You go right ahead and try that, Jonathan,” Maris said softly. “Let’s see how fast Marcus dismantles your career when he realizes you’re trying to steal his father’s legacy.”
