Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Showdown

The executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Whitfield Tower in Atlanta smelled of expensive espresso and suppressed panic.
Jonathan Vance sat at the head of the mahogany table, looking immaculate in a tailored charcoal suit, wearing the smug, predatory grin of a man who believed he had already won. Around him, twelve legacy board members whispered nervously among themselves.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Jonathan began, standing up as the double glass doors swung open.
Marcus Whitfield walked into the room.
He didn't look like a man who had spent the last forty-eight hours in a modest Savannah home painting wooden birds. He wore a razor-sharp black suit, his dark eyes radiating an absolute, chilling authority that instantly silenced the room.
Marcus walked straight to the head of the table, stopping right in front of Jonathan.
“Jonathan,” Marcus said smoothly. “You look nervous. Did you forget to check your financial statements before calling this meeting?”
Jonathan forced a confident laugh. “Save the intimidation tactics, Marcus. You abandoned your post, misallocated corporate funds to an unverified private party, and compromised our market position. The board is ready to vote you out.”
“Is that right?” Marcus pulled a sleek flash drive from his pocket and tossed it onto the table, sliding it right toward the lead legacy director. “Before you vote on my competency, Jonathan, why don't you explain to the board why your private shell company in the Caymans received four million dollars in kickbacks from our primary hardware suppliers last quarter?”
The color drained from Jonathan’s face. He stumbled backward, his hands gripping the edge of the table.
“That... that’s a fabrication! You have no proof—!”
“Maris,” Marcus called out.

The doors opened, and federal agents walked into the boardroom, flanked by state auditors holding thick portfolios of financial evidence.
“Jonathan Vance, you’re under arrest for securities fraud, embezzlement, and corporate espionage,” the lead agent announced, snapping steel handcuffs onto Jonathan’s wrists before he could even draw another breath.
