Chapter 15 - The Secret in the Floorboards

Back in Savannah, the autumn breeze began to shed golden leaves across the courtyard of the community center.
While Marcus was busy neutralizing Beatrice in Atlanta, Elena and her mother Margaret were supervising the renovation of the old storage shed behind the main garage—the final phase of the expansion project.
As a construction worker pulled up the rotted pine floorboards near the back corner of the shed, something metallic caught the dim light.
“Hold on,” Margaret called out, walking over with her cane. “What’s that down there?”
The worker knelt down, brushing away years of accumulated dust and dirt, and lifted a heavy, old-fashioned iron lockbox bearing the initials A.R.
When Marcus returned from Atlanta late that afternoon, he found Elena waiting for him on the front porch of the Reyes home, holding the rusted iron box on her lap.
“What’s this?” Marcus asked, setting his briefcase down and sitting beside her on the wooden swing.
“We found it under the floorboards of the old storage shed,” Elena said softly. “It has your name on it, symbolically speaking. Dad’s initials.”
Marcus reached out, his fingers tracing the rusted latch. With a sharp snap, the ancient lock gave way.
Inside sat a yellowed notebook with pages filled with neat, precise mechanical diagrams, a small silver pocket watch, and a hand-written letter addressed in Alberto’s familiar, elegant cursive.
Marcus unfolded the letter. His breath hitched as he read the first lines:
May you like
“If you are reading this, boy, it means you finally found your way back home. I knew you would. You have the heart of an eagle—you were meant to fly high. Never forget where your wings were built.”
Tears blurred Marcus’s vision. He pressed the letter against his chest, feeling the profound, enduring weight of a love that had outlived time itself.
