Chapter 2 - The Kitchen Corridor

The cavernous kitchen of Beaumont House was a theater of chaos. Sous-chefs shouted orders, plating stations moved with mechanical precision, and steam hissed from industrial dishwashers.

Elena stood near the dish return station, wiping her forehead with the back of her wrist, trying to catch her breath.

“Elena.”

She turned, startled to see the billionaire tech mogul standing right beside the dish racks, entirely out of place amid the clatter of silver and porcelain.

“Mr. Whitfield? Is Sophia okay? Did she make a mess—?”

“Your father,” Marcus interrupted, his voice low, urgent, and vibrating with an emotion Elena couldn't begin to decipher. “Alberto Reyes. Was he a mechanic in Savannah?”

Elena froze. The tray in her hands slipped an inch before she caught it, her knuckles turning white. Her dark eyes widened with sudden, defensive wariness.

“How do you know my father?” she demanded, her voice dropping into a sharp whisper. “He died three years ago. Who are you?”

Marcus felt as though he had been struck in the chest. “Dead? Alberto... passed away?”

“Yes,” Elena said bitterly, looking away as a fresh wave of grief tightened her throat. “A massive heart attack while he was trying to fix a transmission. He worked himself into an early grave trying to keep our family afloat after the medical debts piled up. Why are you asking about him? Are you a bill collector?”

Marcus stared at her, the pieces of a puzzle he hadn't known existed suddenly crashing together. The carved bird, the dark eyes, the quiet resilience.

“I’m not a bill collector, Elena,” Marcus said, taking a half-step closer. “Twenty-two years ago, your father saved my life.”

Elena stared at him, searching his face for a lie, but found only a raw, haunting vulnerability that didn't match the billionaire persona portrayed in the financial press.

Before she could speak, the head catering manager stormed over, clapping his hands together loudly.

“Elena! What are you doing fraternizing with the guests? Get back on the floor, or you’re fired!”

Marcus turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto the manager with a gaze so chillingly lethal the man stopped dead in his tracks.

“She isn't getting fired,” Marcus said quietly, his voice cutting through the kitchen noise like a razor. “In fact, she just resigned. And as for this venue... I think I’ll buy it tomorrow and turn it into a parking lot.”
