Chapter 9 - The New Foundation

Three months later, the front page of the Wall Street Journal featured a sprawling headline: WHITFIELD SYSTEMS UNVEILS MULTI-BILLION-DOLLAR ALBERTO REYES COMMUNITY INITIATIVE.
The old garage in Savannah where Alberto had once sheltered a starving runaway boy had been completely transformed. It was now a state-of-the-art vocational training center and community clinic, funded entirely by Whitfield Systems and managed by Elena Reyes.
On a bright Saturday afternoon, the courtyard of the newly rebuilt center was filled with laughter, music, and the bright colors of children running across the lawn.
Sophia raced toward Marcus, holding up a newly painted wooden bird with a bright red wing.
“Look, Uncle Marcus! I painted it just like you said!”
Marcus knelt down, smiling warmly as he adjusted the string around her neck. “It’s a masterpiece, Sophia. Your grandfather would be very proud.”
Elena walked up behind her daughter, holding a tray of iced tea, her dark eyes shining with quiet joy. She wore a simple summer dress, looking entirely at peace for the first time in her life.
“You know, you could stay here permanently, Marcus,” Elena teased gently, handing him a glass. “You don't have to keep flying back and forth to Atlanta every week.”
Marcus stood up, taking the glass, but never breaking eye contact with her.

“I was actually thinking the exact same thing,” Marcus said softly. “Turns out, I spent twenty-two years looking for a home in the wrong places. I finally found it.”
Elena smiled, reaching out to take his hand.
