Chapter 10 - The Groundwork of a Legacy

The morning sun filtered through the massive oak trees surrounding the newly established Alberto Reyes Community Center in Savannah, casting long, peaceful shadows across the freshly paved courtyard.

Marcus Whitfield stood on the front steps, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms as he watched a group of local teenagers learning the basics of mechanical engineering in the newly equipped workshop. The garage where Alberto had once hidden a runaway boy was no longer just a memory; it was a beating heart for the entire neighborhood.

Elena walked out of the administrative office holding a clipboard, her expression a mix of professional focus and quiet contentment.

“Enrollment for the autumn vocational trade classes is at full capacity,” Elena reported, stopping beside Marcus. “We had to turn away forty applicants because we simply ran out of workbench space.”

Marcus smiled, resting his hands against the wooden railing. “Then we buy the empty lot next door and expand the workshop by winter.”

Elena laughed softly, shaking her head. “You always default to buying real estate, Marcus. Not every problem can be solved by throwing a billion dollars at it.”

“True,” Marcus replied, turning to look at her with deep warmth in his dark eyes. “Some problems require a three-year-old girl with a crushed white flower and a wooden bird.”

Elena’s smile softened. She looked out toward the lawn, where Sophia was busy feeding breadcrumbs to a flock of sparrows near the fountain.

“Speaking of Sophia,” Elena murmured, “she’s asking when you’re taking her fishing again down by the river.”

“This Saturday,” Marcus promised without hesitation. “And this time, I’ll actually bait the hook instead of letting her catch imaginary whales.”
