Chapter 12 - The Unwelcome Inheritance

Two days later, a sleek black town car rolled up the gravel driveway of the Reyes home in Savannah.

Elena was watering the hydrangeas on the front porch when the car doors opened. A tall, impeccably dressed woman in a charcoal wool coat stepped out. Her silver-streaked hair was styled in an immaculate chignon, and her sharp, assessing eyes scanned the modest property with undisguised disdain.

Elena dropped the garden hose, wiping her hands on her apron as she walked down the steps.

“Can I help you?” Elena asked, her voice calm but guarded.

The woman stopped, looking Elena up and down as if she were inspecting a flawed piece of merchandise. “You must be Elena Reyes. The woman managing Marcus Whitfield’s little charitable experiment down here.”

“I’m the director of the Alberto Reyes Community Center,” Elena corrected smoothly. “And who might you be?”

“Beatrice Whitfield,” the woman replied, her voice dripping with aristocratic condescension. “Marcus’s estranged great-aunt. And someone who needs to explain to me why family trust assets are being funneled into a glorified repair shop in rural Georgia.”

Elena didn't flinch. She crossed her arms, returning Beatrice’s cold stare with an immovable calm.

“Mr. Whitfield allocates his own capital however he sees fit,” Elena said evenly. “If you have an issue with how the trust is managed, I suggest you take it up with his legal team in Atlanta. They’re very familiar with family members who try to contest his decisions.”

Beatrice’s eyes flashed with fury. “You think because Marcus is blinded by guilt over a dead mechanic that you have a permanent claim to this fortune? People like you always overplay your hand. Enjoy your little garage while it lasts, my dear. Empires built on charity always crumble from within.”

With that, Beatrice turned on her heel, climbed back into her town car, and sped down the driveway.
