Chapter 13 - The Call to Atlanta

Twenty minutes later, Marcus’s private SUV pulled into the driveway. He had received an urgent alert from the home security cameras and skipped his afternoon meetings in town.

He found Elena standing on the porch, staring thoughtfully at the tire tracks in the gravel.

“Elena,” Marcus called out, jogging up the wooden steps. “The security system flagged an unauthorized visitor. Are you and Sophia alright?”

“We’re fine,” Elena sighed, turning to face him. “Your great-aunt Beatrice just paid us a visit.”

Marcus stopped dead in his tracks. The dark, piercing look in his eyes turned to ice. “Beatrice? She hasn't lived in the country in a decade. What did she say to you?”

“She threatened the foundation,” Elena said honestly. “She thinks I’m a gold-digger riding on your coattails, and she made it clear she’s going to use whatever legal loopholes she has left to dismantle the community center.”

Marcus reached out, gently taking her hands in his. His grip was firm, reassuring, and absolute.

“Beatrice has zero legal standing,” Marcus said fiercely. “My trust is locked tight. She’s just a ghost rattling chains in an empty attic. I’ll handle her tomorrow morning.”

“You don't have to fight every battle for me, Marcus,” Elena whispered, looking up into his eyes.

“Yes, I do,” Marcus replied softly, his voice dropping an octave. “Because for the first time in my life, I have something worth protecting.”
