Chapter 7 - The Emergency Summons

Two days later, Marcus was sitting on the back porch of the Reyes home, helping Sophia paint a small wooden bird with watercolor paints, when his cell phone buzzed violently.
It was Maris.
“Marcus, we have a Code Red,” Maris’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and urgent. “Jonathan Vance has called an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. in Atlanta. He’s rallied the legacy shareholders. They’re claiming your ‘unauthorized philanthropic expenditures’ and sudden disappearance violate your fiduciary duty. They’re voting to oust you as CEO.”
Marcus didn't flinch. He handed Sophia a blue paintbrush, wiped his hands on a rag, and stood up, walking toward the edge of the porch.
“Let them call the meeting, Maris,” Marcus said, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal register that made even his chief legal counsel pause. “Tell them I’ll be there. And make sure the federal auditors have copies of Jonathan’s private shell-company transfers ready for the presentation.”
Elena walked out onto the porch carrying a tray of lemonade, overhearing the end of the conversation. Her expression tightened with worry.
“You have to go back, don't you?” she asked softly.
Marcus turned, looking at her. “I do. But I’m coming back.”

“You don't have to fight a corporate war on our account, Marcus,” Elena said, setting the tray down. “If losing your company is the price of helping us—?”
“Elena,” Marcus interrupted, stepping close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from him. “They aren't fighting me over money. They’re fighting me because they think I’m weak. They’re about to find out how wrong they are.”
