Chapter 10 - The Unwelcome Visitor

Emily pushed open the heavy glass door of her private office.

The room was spacious and minimalist, featuring polished concrete floors, modern art pieces, and a large mahogany desk overlooking the bustling city square. Standing by the window, staring out at the sunset with his shoulders slumped and his tie loosened around his collar, was David.

He looked smaller. The immaculate, arrogant groom from that morning had vanished, replaced by a broken, defeated man wearing a rumpled tuxedo and clutching a worn leather duffel bag.

Emily didn't flinch. She closed the door quietly behind her, leaning back against it with her arms crossed over her chest.

"You've got a lot of nerve showing up here, David," Emily said, her voice dropping into a cool, dangerous register that commanded absolute silence. "Did your security detail let you in, or did you have to sneak past the front desk like a common trespasser?"

David turned around slowly. His eyes were bloodshot, dark circles carved deep beneath them from exhaustion and panic. He looked at Emily—truly looked at her—taking in the powerful, confident woman standing before him, radiating a level of grace and authority he had never appreciated when she was cooking his meals and typing his legal briefs.

"Emily..." David’s voice cracked, a pathetic, desperate rasp. He took a hesitant step forward, his hands trembling. "Please. I... I had nowhere else to go."

"That sounds familiar," Emily replied coldly, not moving an inch. "If I recall correctly, those were almost the exact words you said to me five years ago when you handed me an eviction notice and told me my presence was holding back your career. Except you didn't even give me a duffel bag."

David flinched as if he had been slapped across the face. He dropped his gaze to the polished floor, a suffocating wave of humiliation washing over him.

"I deserved that," David whispered, his voice shaking. "I deserved every bit of it. I was arrogant, blind, and cruel. But Emily... we have a history. We built the foundation of our lives together. Please... as the mother of my children... don't let me end up on the street. Help me."
