Chapter 13 - The Awakening in the Dark

The steam rising from the cheap ceramic mug curled into the cold air of the diner booth, but David couldn't bring himself to drink it. He stared at his reflection in the dark, swirling liquid.
For the first time in his life, there were no legal briefs to hide behind, no corporate bank accounts to buffer his failures, and no adoring fiancée to impress with manufactured charm. There was only him—naked, penniless, and utterly exposed to the consequences of his own choices.
As he sat there in the dim light of the diner, a montage of memories flooded his exhausted mind. He remembered Emily—her gentle hands rubbing his shoulders late into the night while he studied for the bar exam; her quiet, unwavering smile when he told her he had secured his first big partnership; her tear-filled eyes the morning he locked her out of their apartment because she no longer fit the aesthetic of his wealthy new life.
He had called her a burden. He had called her a distraction.

Yet, while he had been busy building an empire of sand on the backs of stolen intellectual property and manipulative relationships, Emily had forged a mountain of steel out of nothing. She had raised three brilliant, protective boys, built an international fashion house, and reclaimed her family’s stolen legacy—all without asking him for a single dime of pity.
A heavy, suffocating sob rose in David’s throat. He pressed his palms against his face, his shoulders shaking as the tears he had held back all day finally broke free. He wept not just for his lost wealth, but for the man he had become—and the woman he had so foolishly thrown away.
