Chapter 8 - The Desperate Call

The clock on the penthouse wall ticked relentlessly, its rhythmic sound driving David to the brink of insanity. He threw handfuls of shirts, a few pairs of slacks, and his passport into a worn leather duffel bag—the very same bag he had used during his college days, before the wealth, before the betrayal, before everything came crashing down.

His phone buzzed. It was an unrecognized number with a local area code.

Desperate for any lifeline, David swiped accept. "Hello? Who is this?"

"David," a soft, trembling voice answered. It was Olivia.

Hearing her name triggered a sudden, blinding flash of fury. "You! This is all your fault! If your family hadn't pushed me to show off, if you hadn't demanded a million-dollar wedding, none of this—"

"Save it, David," Olivia interrupted, her voice hard, cold, and entirely devoid of the affection she had worn like perfume just hours earlier. "My father already spoke with our corporate attorneys. Our marriage license was never officially filed with the county clerk this morning because my father suspected your financial instability. As of twenty minutes ago, our engagement is officially annulled, and my family’s legal team has filed a restraining order to keep you fifty yards away from me and my assets."

A strangled gasp escaped David’s throat. "Olivia, please! We can work this out! I still love you—"

"Don't flatter yourself, David. You never loved me. You loved my bank account," Olivia snapped, before abruptly disconnecting the call. Beep. Beep. Beep.

David stood frozen in the center of the echoing, empty penthouse. The silence was deafening. In less than twelve hours, he had gone from being a celebrated corporate lawyer and wealthy groom to a penniless, homeless pariah with a single duffel bag and a mountain of federal debt.

He walked slowly to the balcony, looking down at the bustling city streets where people walked past, completely unaware of his existence. He was utterly alone. No money, no status, no fiancée, and no career.

And as he looked down at his reflection in the glass balcony door, he realized something even more terrifying: the woman he had discarded, the woman he had tried to humiliate in front of all of elite society, was now the one holding the keys to his entire world.
