Chapter 15 - The Foundation’s Promise

The silence in the master bedroom stretched thin for a moment. Emily looked down at her three sons, who were now happily playing with a set of building blocks on the plush rug near the window, completely oblivious to their biological father’s miserable plight.

"Did he ask for me?" Emily asked, her voice completely neutral, stripped of anger or triumph.

"No," Marcus replied, shaking his head. "According to the shelter intake coordinator, he didn't ask for anyone. He just sat in the corner with a worn leather duffel bag, staring at the floor, refusing to speak to the counselors."

Emily took a slow, deep breath. She walked over to the window, looking out over the expansive gardens that stretched toward the private iron security gates.

"I don't hate him anymore, Marcus," Emily said softly, her gaze steady. "Hate requires energy, and I spent too many years wasting my energy on anger. But I won't rescue him either. Some lessons can't be taught with words or court orders. He has to hit rock bottom so he can finally learn how to build something real with his own hands, just like I did."

Marcus nodded slowly, resting a supportive hand on his sister's shoulder. "You're a remarkable woman, Emily. Dad would be so proud of the empire—and the family—you've built."

"Thank you, big brother," Emily smiled, leaning into his embrace for a brief moment before turning back to her sons. "Now, who’s ready for pancakes? Because if we don't feed these tiny monsters soon, they're going to dismantle the entire east wing."
