Chapter 14 - Morning on the Estate

While David spent his first night as a homeless outcast in a dingy diner, dawn broke in breathtaking splendor over the Caldwell-Vance estate in the wealthy northern suburbs.
The sprawling limestone mansion, now officially restored under the Vance Foundation trust, was bathed in golden morning light. Inside the master suite, the air was filled with the soft, happy gurgle of the triplets waking up for the day.
Emily stood by the French doors of the balcony, holding a warm cup of herbal tea as she watched the sun crest the horizon. The crisp morning breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming autumn roses from the estate gardens below.
The door to the master bedroom clicked open, and the three boys came barreling in like a tiny stampede of enthusiastic puppies, still wearing their cartoon-printed pajamas.
"Mom! Mom! Wake up! It's Saturday!" Leo shouted, leading the charge and scrambling up onto the edge of the plush king-sized bed, followed closely by Liam and Lucas.
Emily turned around, a bright, radiant smile breaking across her face. She set her teacup down on the nightstand and opened her arms wide. "All right, all right, I'm awake! Come here, my little monsters."
The boys leaped into her arms, tackling her onto the mattress in a tangle of limbs and joyous laughter. Emily tickled their ribs, listening to their infectious giggles fill the room with pure, unadulterated life.
Standing in the doorway, leaning lazily against the frame with a mug of black coffee in his hand, was Marcus Vance—not the corporate lawyer from yesterday, but Emily’s trusted older brother who had recently returned from international medical missions to help manage the foundation's charitable outreach.
"Looks like a full-scale invasion," Marcus teased, taking a sip of his coffee.
Emily laughed, untangling herself from the boys and sitting up. "It’s Saturday morning, Marcus. You should know by now that peace and quiet are strictly prohibited in this household."
"Well, enjoy the peace while it lasts," Marcus smiled, his expression turning slightly more serious. "The foundation board meeting is scheduled for Monday morning to finalize the community vocational academy. And... I received a rather pathetic inquiry from a local municipal shelter downtown late last night."

Emily’s smile faltered slightly, her eyes narrowing. "An inquiry about what?"
"About a man fitting David’s exact description, who spent the night sleeping on a bench outside the intake office after getting kicked out of a 24-hour diner," Marcus said quietly, watching his sister’s reaction. "He has nothing left, Em. Absolutely nothing."
