Chapter 1 - The First ThreadThe heavy marble echo of the mansion hallway seemed to swallow the silence left behind by the cut-to-black. Damian stood frozen, his eyes locked onto the two security guards stationed near the grand double doors. One of them—Miller, a veteran head of internal security who had served the family for over a decade—was subtly shifting his weight backward, his hand hovering fractions of an inch away from his holster.

"Sir..." Sophie’s voice trembled, breaking the thick air like a fragile glass. Her knuckles were white as she gripped the fabric of her black maid's apron. "Please. Put the note down. You don’t understand what kind of forces are moving through these walls."

Damian didn’t look at her. His gaze remained fixed on Miller. The memory card felt cold and heavy in his palm, the three handwritten words—TRUST NO ONE—burning into his consciousness like an acid wash. How had a piece of encrypted intelligence found its way onto his prize Cane Corso, deep inside a private, biometric-locked wing of his estate?

Bruno gave another low, chest-deep rumble, shaking water droplets from his massive black jowls as he stepped out of the marble tub. Lily giggled, entirely oblivious to the lethal tension crackling between the adults, and reached out to grab a dry towel from the rack.

"Sophie," Damian said, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all warmth. "You have exactly five seconds to explain why my most trusted security detail looks like a man about to draw his weapon in front of my daughter."

Miller took another slow step back into the shadow of the crystal chandelier, his face pale, sweat beading along his hairline. "Mr. Vance... protocol dictates that any unsecured media found on the premises must be confiscated immediately. Hand it over, sir. For your family's safety."

"My safety?" Damian’s eyes narrowed into calculating slits. He stepped smoothly in front of Lily, shielding her small frame with his tailored three-piece suit. "You're backing away, Miller. Men with clean consciences don't retreat when a hidden camera memory card turns up in a dog's collar. Who pays your secondary retainer? Is it the board, or is it the ghost trying to tear my life apart?"

Before Miller could answer, a piercing, automated shriek echoed through the mansion's integrated intercom system.

“Warning. Perimeter breach in Sector Four. Biometric lockdown initiated across all primary residential wings.”

The warm chandelier lights instantly flickered, plunging the luxurious bathroom into a harsh, pulsing crimson emergency glow. Sophie screamed, dropping to her knees to pull Lily into her arms. Bruno bared his teeth, turning his massive head toward the grand hallway as the heavy iron security shutters began to descend over the exits, trapping them inside.
