Chapter 6 - The Vault of the AncestorsThe cold marble floor felt like ice against Damian’s palms as he slid down the wall, his vision blurring at the edges as the neurotoxin systematically shut down his nervous system.

"You... you traitorous bitch," Damian whispered, the words tasting like copper in his mouth. "Bruno... heel..."

The massive Cane Corso paused, looking down at his master with dark, expressive eyes filled with a heartbreaking mixture of loyalty and programmed obedience. Bruno let out a soft whine, taking a step toward Damian, but a sharp, ultrasonic click emitted from Sophie’s silver pendant. The dog instantly froze, his head snapping back toward the maid.

"Don't fight it, Damian," Sophie said, kneeling beside him, her expression a mix of genuine pity and cold resolve. "Your father’s legacy was never about wealth. It was about control. The world is burning, and Aegis is the only fire-suppression system left standing. Lily is going to save millions of lives—by ensuring they never have to make a choice again."

Miller stepped over Damian’s paralyzed body, pressing a biometric palm scanner hidden behind the heavy gold frame of the grandfather’s portrait. With a deep, pneumatic mechanical groan, a hidden section of the wall slid open, revealing a subterranean elevator shaft lit by sterile, white LED strips.

"The vault is sealed," Miller announced, glancing back at Sophie. "We have four minutes before the exterior containment protocol triggers a complete site burn. Let's move."

Sophie scooped Lily up into her arms. The four-year-old didn't cry; she rested her head peacefully on Sophie’s shoulder, completely entranced by the high-pitched hum of the pendant. Bruno trotted faithfully beside them, his powerful tail swaying in a rhythmic, unbothered cadence.

Damian clawed at the marble floor, his fingers scraping against the unyielding stone. He couldn't speak. He couldn't stand. But as the elevator doors began to slide shut, locking his daughter away into the dark belly of the corporate monster his family had created, a surge of pure, unadulterated rage flooded his bloodstream, temporarily overriding the poison.

With a superhuman grunt, Damian lunged forward, jamming his heavy signet ring—carved from solid tungsten steel—into the closing elevator track just as the doors met.
