Chapter 8 - The Canine MutinyBefore Sophie could reach for her pendant, Bruno launched his seventy-kilogram frame forward, knocking her violently against the interior wall of the elevator. The silver pendant slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the steel floor and shattering into a thousand glittering pieces.

The high-pitched hum instantly died.

Lily’s eyes fluttered open, blinking rapidly against the harsh LED lighting. She looked around in sudden, child-like confusion, her face scrunching up as she saw Sophie pinned beneath the massive dog.

"Sophie? What's happening? I want my daddy," Lily cried out, tears finally spilling down her cheeks.

"Lily! Crawl to me! Now!" Damian yelled, dragging his shattered, bleeding arm out of the doorway and extending his good hand toward the elevator car.

Without a moment's hesitation, the four-year-old scrambled across the steel floor, diving past Bruno and straight into her father’s open arms. Damian pulled her tight against his chest, shielding her face as he backed away from the elevator shaft.

Miller drew his sidearm with lightning speed, leveling the barrel straight at Damian’s head. "Drop the girl, Vance, or I paint this marble with her brains. The network needs the bloodline, it doesn't need her conscious!"

Bruno didn't give him the chance.

With a ferocious, blood-curdling roar that echoed through the subterranean shaft, the Cane Corso leaped from the elevator car, sinking his powerful jaws directly into Miller’s weapon-bearing wrist. The gun fired wildly into the vaulted ceiling, raining plaster and dust down upon them, before clattering uselessly to the floor.

Miller screamed in agony as Bruno slammed him against the reinforced concrete wall, neutralizing the head of security in a matter of seconds.

Sophie scrambled to her feet inside the elevator, her fair skin bruised, her maid's uniform torn and stained with blood. She looked at Damian, who was clutching Lily tightly while struggling to rise to his feet, weaponless and bleeding.

"You think you've won, Damian?" Sophie laughed hysterically, blood dripping from her lip. "The upload was at ninety-eight percent before the pendant broke. The system is already autonomous. It doesn't need us anymore. It doesn't need anyone."
