Chapter 13 - Blood in the WeaveThe abandoned Queens textile factory loomed out of the fog like a monolithic skeleton of rusted iron and broken glass. Decades ago, it had hummed with the deafening roar of thousands of mechanical looms, churning out synthetic fabrics for half the East Coast. Now, it was a tomb of dust, pigeon droppings, and forgotten history.

Our convoy of three black SUVs slid silently into the loading bay. Carmine's men fanned out instantly, assault rifles raised, sweeping the cavernous ground floor with tactical flashlights.

Gabriel walked beside me, his pistol drawn and ready. The air inside smelled of damp concrete, rust, and—faintly—burnt almonds.

"Stay behind me," Gabriel muttered, sweeping his light across a row of massive, silent looms that stood like iron monuments in the dark.

"This is room 4-B," I whispered, the memories of my childhood flooding back. My mother used to bring me here when I had nowhere else to go, sitting me on a stool in the corner while she scrubbed grease and chemical residue off the industrial drains. "She worked on this exact floor for four decades."

We moved deeper into the labyrinth of machinery, guided by the faint flicker of a halogen work light glowing from a partitioned office at the far end of the floor.

As we approached the office door, the sound of muffled voices drifted out.

"...the girl is smarter than Julian was," a harsh, rasping voice echoed. Silas Vance. "She recognized the resin instantly. If she opens the safety deposit box left behind in the old estate archives, she'll find the complete synthesis ledger."

"And if she doesn't?" a second, unfamiliar voice replied—cold, female, and razor-sharp.

"Then we burn her out just like we did her mother."

Gabriel didn't wait. He kicked the wooden door off its hinges with a thunderous crash, his pistol raised and sweeping the room in a fraction of a second.

"Nobody moves!" Gabriel roared.

Inside the small, dusty office, Silas Vance stood beside a sleek metal desk. But he wasn't alone. Sitting in a leather swivel chair, calmly sipping black coffee, was a woman whose face made my blood run instantly cold.

She had silver-streaked hair tied back in a strict bun, cold grey eyes, and a tailored business suit that looked entirely out of place in a ruined factory.

It was Dr. Evelyn Vance—the matriarch of the Vance family, long rumored to be dead, and the actual architect behind the syndicate's entire corporate empire.

Silas didn't look surprised. He just smiled, sliding his hands slowly into his pockets.

"Welcome, Gabriel," Evelyn said smoothly, setting her coffee cup down with a soft click. "And welcome to you, Maya. It’s been a long time since anyone from the Falcone family stepped foot in my laboratory."
