Chapter 2 - The Inner Circle’s AlibiBy midnight, the Falcone estate was a fortress wrapped in paranoia. The massive wrought-iron gates were welded shut from the inside, and Falcone's elite enforcers patrolled the perimeter with assault rifles. Inside the grand library, illuminated only by the amber glow of a massive crystal chandelier and a crackling fireplace, the primary suspects were assembled.

There were four of them.
First was Julian Vance, the syndicate’s legal counsel—a sharp-suited, silver-tongued viper who managed the family's offshore accounts and legal loopholes.
Second was Elena Falcone, Gabriel’s younger sister, draped in emerald silk, whose eyes flashed with a dangerous combination of fear and ambition.
Third was Vincenzo "The Anchor" Rossi, the head of security, built like a brick wall and sweating heavily beneath his tailored suit.
Fourth was Dr. Harrison Cole, who had been dragged back to the estate by two enforcers before he could reach the highway. He was pale, shaking, and spitting fury.
"This is an outrage!" Cole screamed, slamming his briefcase onto the mahogany table. "You're holding a licensed medical professional hostage over the word of a common cleaning girl!"
Gabriel sat at the head of the table, flanked by Carmine and me. He wore a dark silk robe, his injured shoulder bandaged cleanly. He didn't speak. He just let the silence stretch, thick and suffocating, until Cole's voice withered into nervous stutters.
"Tell me, Doctor," Gabriel finally said, his voice dangerously soft. "Who had access to my surgical suite during the operation three weeks ago?"
"Standard protocol!" Cole snapped, avoiding Gabriel's eyes. "Only my surgical team and the estate's medical assistants! No one else!"
"That's a lie," I stepped forward from the shadows, placing a manila folder onto the table.
All eyes snapped toward me. Elena sneered, crossing her arms. "And who authorized the help to speak at the high table?"
"She speaks because I tell her to," Gabriel countered, his voice snapping like a whip. "Go on, Maya."
I opened the folder, revealing synchronized security footage logs and digital access cards. "According to the digital logs, Dr. Cole, you didn't use your regular surgical team. Two days before the surgery, you dismissed your lead scrub nurse and replaced her with a private contractor whose identity doesn't match any registered medical license in the tri-state area."
Cole swallowed hard, his throat bobbing. "That... that was an administrative error. Personnel shortages—"
"And according to the chemical analysis of the thread I pulled from your shoulder, Mr. Falcone," I continued, turning to the boss, "that specific industrial maritime resin is exclusively imported by a shipping front company registered in the Cayman Islands under a shell corporation named Vance Legal Holdings."
Julian Vance didn't flinch. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, a cold, polished smile spreading across his face. He leaned back, steepling his fingers.
"A very creative theory, young lady," Vance purred, his voice dripping with condescension. "Corporate law firms handle hundreds of corporate shells. It’s entirely normal for us to hold accounts for maritime logistics. To connect a routine corporate portfolio to an assassination attempt on the Boss based on a thread and a coincidence is absurd."
"It wasn't a coincidence, Julian," Elena interjected sharply, her eyes darting between Vance and her brother. "Everyone knows Julian wanted to restructure the syndicate's distribution contracts. With Gabriel dead, Julian would control the legal and financial empire."
"Or perhaps you wanted him dead, Elena," Vincenzo Rossi growled, resting his heavy hand on his belt. "So you could cash out your trust and pay off your massive gambling debts in Atlantic City."
Shouting erupted around the table. Accusations flew like shrapnel. Cole screamed about his civil rights, Julian mocked Vincenzo's intellect, and Elena hurled wine glasses across the room.
Gabriel raised a single hand. The room went dead silent instantly.
He leaned forward, his dark eyes sweeping over the four people he trusted most with his life.
"None of you are clean," Gabriel whispered, the cold menace in his tone chilling my blood. "Every single one of you has a secret. Every single one of you had a motive. But only one of you had the surgical precision and the legal reach to orchestrate this."
May you like
Gabriel pointed a finger directly at the center of the table.
"And Maya is going to help me find out which one of you is wearing a dead man's shroud."
