Chapter 27 - The Finger on the ButtonMy breath hitched. I scanned the base of the wooden pillars supporting the grand staircase. Sure enough, neat bundles of military-grade C4 explosives were strapped directly into the load-bearing beams, connected to the wireless detonator in Evelyn’s hand.

"You're insane," Carmine muttered, raising his weapon. "She'll bury us all."
"She won't press it," I stepped out from behind Gabriel, my voice cutting through the silence like a razor blade.
Evelyn's cold eyes snapped onto me. "Ah, the cleaning girl. The little chemist who thinks she can outsmart decades of corporate infrastructure."
"You aren't a corporate mastermind, Evelyn," I said, walking slowly toward the staircase, keeping my pistol steady. "You're a coward hiding behind explosives because your chemical formulas failed and your empire crumbled."
Evelyn’s thumb hovered directly over the red button on the detonator, her face twitching with rage. "One click, girl, and you vaporize."
"Go ahead," I challenged, taking another step upward. "Press it. But before you do, check the LED status light on your detonator."
Evelyn frowned, her eyes darting down to the device in her hand.
The small green status light was blinking a rapid, steady amber.
"What... what is this?" Evelyn stammered, panic finally cracking her icy facade.
"While Carmine secured the perimeter, I hacked into your chalet's local encrypted frequency and rerouted your detonator's wireless relay," I said, smiling coldly as I tapped my encrypted tablet. "That button isn't connected to the C4 anymore, Evelyn. It's connected to the chalet's automated sprinkler system."
Evelyn slammed her thumb down on the button.
WHOOSH!
High-pressure water jets exploded from the ceiling fire sprinklers, drenching Evelyn in freezing water and soaking the C4 charges, neutralizing the detonator instantly.

Before Evelyn could react, Gabriel surged up the stairs with blinding speed, grabbing her by the arms and slamming her against the wooden banister, disarming her in a single fluid motion.
"It's over, Evelyn," Gabriel whispered, his voice dark and absolute.
