Chapter 14 - The Matriarch’s LedgerThe air in the dilapidated factory office grew instantly thick with menace. Carmine and two of his elite enforcers poured through the ruined doorway, their assault rifles locked onto Silas and Evelyn Vance.

"Your little corporate empire is burning to the ground, Evelyn," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into that terrifying, icy register that had made him a legend in the underworld. "You should have stayed in the grave where you hid for twenty years."

Evelyn didn't flinch. She leaned back in her chair, a faint, condescending smile playing on her lips.

"Grave? My dear boy, I never left," Evelyn replied, her voice steady and cultured. "While you and your father were busy shooting up warehouses and shaking down dockworkers, I was building the infrastructure that actually keeps this city running. Do you think a syndicate survives on bullets alone? It survives on chemistry, patents, and legal immunity."

She shifted her cold grey eyes toward me. "And you... you have your mother's eyes. Stubborn. Observant. Completely unaware of what she was actually doing."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "What are you talking about? My mother was a cleaning woman!"

"Your mother, Maya, was Dr. Elena Vance’s—my own cousin's—lead chemical engineer before the union strikes destroyed our family's primary holdings in the seventies," Evelyn stated calmly. "When the factory went under, she chose to stay behind, hiding her credentials behind a mop and a bucket to keep you safe from men like Gabriel. But a chemist never truly forgets how to weave a lethal thread."

Gabriel’s gaze flicked briefly toward me, a silent question in his eyes. I shook my head fiercely. "She raised me alone! She never talked about chemistry!"

"Because she was hiding the master ledger," Silas spoke up, stepping out from the shadow of the desk. He tossed a heavy, fire-resistant black box onto the table between us. "The formula for the neuro-reactive polymer used in those surgical stitches isn't just a weapon. It's a key. A patent worth billions in illegal medical contracts across global black markets."

Gabriel raised his pistol an inch, aiming directly at Silas's chest. "Open it."

Silas chuckled, reaching down to unlatch the box. "Careful, Gabriel. This box isn't locked with a key. It's rigged with a chemical tripwire. If the wrong pressure is applied..."

Before Silas could finish his sentence, the heavy steel door behind us slammed shut with a deafening CLANG.

Red emergency strobe lights flickered to life along the factory ceiling, casting jagged, bloody shadows across the room. Outside the office windows, the roar of massive industrial diesel engines revving to life shook the concrete floor beneath our boots.

"A trap," Carmine barked, spinning around and firing his weapon at the reinforced glass door. The bullets simply flattened and fell harmlessly to the floor. Bulletproof glass.

Evelyn stood up gracefully, smoothing her skirt. "You didn't really think we'd meet you here without a contingency plan, did you, Gabriel? The factory is wired with industrial thermite charges. In five minutes, this entire building—and everyone inside it—will be reduced to ash."
