Chapter 18 - The Port of ShadowsThree nights later, the Port of Newark was blanketed in a thick, sulfurous coastal fog that rolled off the Atlantic and swallowed the towering container cranes whole. Massive cargo ships groaned against their moorings, their hulls dripping with salt water and grease.

We moved like ghosts through Berth 4, a restricted zone controlled exclusively by Vance Logistics shells.

Carmine led the vanguard, neutralizing two private security guards with silent precision before their radios could click. Gabriel and I slipped inside Warehouse B, a massive corrugated steel structure filled with stacked crates marked with biohazard warnings and medical supply labels.

"Container 40-beta," I whispered, holding a portable digital scanner against the barcode of a towering wooden crate.

The screen flashed green. CONFIRMED: SYNTHETIC POLYMER PRECURSORS.

"Set the charge, Carmine," Gabriel ordered, keeping his pistol raised toward the dark rafters above.

Carmine stepped forward with a specialized aerosol canister filled with the enzyme-laced solvent I had synthesized in the estate lab. Instead of blowing up the crate, we were going to poison their entire inventory from the inside out, rewriting the chemical signatures so that any surgical suture manufactured from this batch would self-destruct upon contact with human skin.

As Carmine worked the valve, the faint hiss of pressurized gas filled the air.

Suddenly, the overhead halogen floodlights snapped on with a blinding glare.

"Well, well, well," a cold, cultured voice echoed from the catwalk above.

We spun around. Silas Vance stood leaning against the metal railing, flanked by four heavily armed mercenaries holding assault rifles trained directly down at us. But Silas wasn't alone. Standing beside him was Dr. Evelyn Vance, her face twisted into a mask of pure, venomous triumph.

"You really thought it would be that easy, didn't you, little cleaning girl?" Silas mocked, clapping his hands slowly. "Walking right into my warehouse with a bottle of home-brewed chemicals."

Gabriel didn't flinch. He didn't even raise his voice. He just looked up at Silas like a lion staring down a stray dog.

"You talk too much, Silas," Gabriel said coolly. "Just like your brother."

Evelyn's face darkened with rage. "Kill them. Leave nothing but pieces."
