Chapter 11 - The Inheritance Audit

The morning sun cast long, golden shadows across the mahogany desk in the executive study, illuminating stacks of forensic accounting files that stretched nearly two feet high. Federal investigators had finally cleared the perimeter, leaving behind a trail of subpoena notices and asset-seizure warrants that effectively dismantled Aurelia’s shadow syndicate overnight.

Lorenzo sat across from me, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, meticulously highlighting shell-company transactions that traced back to offshore accounts in Panama.

"They thought they could bleed the shipping routes dry while my father was incapacitated," Lorenzo said, his voice clipped and cold as he slid a fresh ledger across the desk. "Every single cargo manifest from the past four years was systematically altered to siphon capital into private Swiss trusts."

I took the file, my eyes scanning the itemized columns of numbers. Being a former maid who had once scraped by on tips and unpaid rent, looking at millions of dollars in embezzled funds felt surreal. But my hands didn't shake anymore. The weeks of surviving the estate's psychological warfare had forged an unbreakable armor around me.

"They underestimated your father's memory," I replied, glancing toward the doorway where Giovanni was currently undergoing physical therapy with the Swiss specialists. "Aurelia thought a locked mind meant a silent witness. She forgot that true observation doesn't require a voice."

Lorenzo looked up, a faint, appreciative smile touching the corners of his lips. "She also forgot that when you trap a wolf in a corner for five years, it doesn't learn how to beg—it learns how to wait for the throat."

Before we could dive deeper into the financial forensics, a sharp knock echoed on the heavy oak door. Viktor stepped inside, his expression grim, holding an encrypted courier tablet that beeped urgently.

"Mr. Moretti, Clara," Viktor said neutrally. "We have a breach of a different kind. The board of directors just called an emergency quorum. They’re demanding an immediate vote of no confidence to strip the Moretti family of executive control while the federal investigations are active."

Lorenzo’s dark eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "They think blood in the water means they can steal the crown."
