Chapter 4 - The Unholy Alliance

The revelation hit the room like a physical blow. Aurelia Moretti—Lorenzo’s stepmother, who had tragically passed away in a yachting accident in Monaco just three months ago—hadn't been the grieving, charitable widow everyone thought she was. According to the financial records scattered across the desk, she had been systematically bleeding the Moretti shipping empire dry while simultaneously executing a slow-motion assassination of Giovanni.
"She wanted control of the board," Lorenzo muttered, his fingers flying over the financial statements as he traced millions of dollars funneled into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. "With my father incapacitated and me traveling abroad managing the Asian expansion, she was positioning herself as the primary voting proxy. And Mrs. Gable was her loyal attack dog on the ground."
I stood quietly near the doorway, clutching my cardigan around my expanding waistline, feeling completely out of my depth. This wasn't just a domestic dispute between a cruel maid and an old man; this was a high-stakes corporate conspiracy involving millions of dollars, forged signatures, and cold-blooded murder.
"And where do I fit into all of this?" I finally whispered, unable to hold the question back any longer.
Lorenzo looked up from the documents, his dark eyes softening just a fraction as they met mine. He walked over, closing the distance between us with predatory grace.
"You fit in because you were the blind spot they never accounted for," Lorenzo said firmly. "Aurelia and Mrs. Gable thought they owned this house. They thought they could starve my father of dignity, isolate him from reality, and run the empire into the ground without anyone noticing. But they didn't count on a twenty-three-year-old pregnant girl with more integrity in her little finger than my entire family tree possesses."
Giovanni let out a low, gravelly grunt from his wheelchair. We both turned to look at him. With supreme effort, the old man lifted his chin, locked his eyes onto mine, and gave me a tiny, approving nod.
It was the highest praise Giovanni Moretti had given anyone in decades.
"Clara," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a dangerously seductive register as he stepped even closer. "My father trusts you with his life. I am offering you a choice. You can take a severance check of one hundred thousand dollars right now, leave this estate, and live comfortably anywhere in the world until your daughter is born. Or... you can stay. You can help me tear down every single person who ever made you scrub these floors on your knees. What’s it going to be?"
I looked down at my hands—still slightly pink from the harsh chemical soaps Mrs. Gable had forced me to use. I thought about Brody, who had abandoned me with debt and fear. I thought about my unborn daughter, Lily, and the world I wanted to build for her. Running away meant safety, but it also meant letting monsters win.
I looked up, locking my eyes directly onto Lorenzo’s.
"I don't want their money, Mr. Moretti," I said steadily, my voice echoing clearly in the silent study. "I want justice. And I want a front-row seat when they fall."

A slow, genuine smile broke across Lorenzo’s face—the first real smile I had ever seen on him.
"Then welcome to the family, Clara."
