Chapter 18 - The Final Stand

The fourth and final assassin—the team leader—realized his squad had been neutralized. Instead of retreating, he changed tactics entirely. Bypassing the ground floor, he scaled the outer stone ivy pillars, smashed through the second-floor stained-glass window, and dropped directly into Giovanni’s private study where the old man was resting.
I heard the explosive crash of glass echoing from upstairs.
"Giovanni!" I gasped, dropping my caution and sprinting toward the grand staircase as fast as my six-month pregnant frame would allow.
"Clara, wait!" Lorenzo’s voice echoed behind me in frantic pursuit.
When I burst through the double doors of the study, the assassin had Giovanni pinned against the wall, a razor-sharp tactical combat knife pressed dangerously close to the old man’s fragile throat.
"Where are the archive keys?" the assassin hissed in a harsh, foreign accent. "Hand them over, or the old man dies right now."
Giovanni didn't flinch. Despite the cold steel blade pressed against his skin, a fierce, defiant light burned in his eyes. He looked past the assassin and caught my eye, giving a subtle, imperceptible nod.
I raised my Sig Sauer, my hands completely steady. I didn't aim for the assassin’s torso, where protective body armor would stop the bullet. I aimed straight for the assassin’s weapon hand holding the blade.
CRACK!
The gunshot echoed thunderously inside the study, shattering a porcelain vase on the mantelpiece. The bullet struck the exact hilt of the combat knife, knocking it violently out of the assassin’s grip with a shower of sparks.
Before the assassin could react, Lorenzo slammed through the doorway behind him, tackling the intruder to the floor with explosive, unstoppable force. A brutal, rapid scuffle ensued, ending with Lorenzo delivering a crushing blow that knocked the assassin out cold against the hardwood floor.
Silence rushed back into the room, broken only by our heavy breathing.
Lorenzo stood up, instantly rushing over to his father’s wheelchair. "Dad! Are you alright?"
May you like
Giovanni let out a ragged, steady breath, raising his hand to pat his son's shoulder. He then looked at me, a warm, genuine smile breaking across his weathered face.
"Never... better," Giovanni rasped, his voice stronger than ever.
