Chapter 2 - The Inner Sanctum

Lorenzo didn't fire Mrs. Gable on the spot—a move that terrified her even more, because true cruelty always prefers a slow, agonizing psychological dismantling over a quick execution. Instead, he ordered his head of security, a towering man named Viktor with a scar cutting through his left eyebrow, to lock Mrs. Gable and her two loyal accomplices in the south wing butler’s pantry until further notice.
"And touch nothing," Lorenzo had warned her coldly. "If a single ledger, receipt, or security log is altered before I audit this estate, Viktor won't just throw you out on the street. He’ll make sure you spend the rest of your natural life wishing you had never learned how to breathe."
As the guards dragged a hyperventilating Mrs. Gable away, the massive foyer emptied out, leaving only Lorenzo, his father, and me.
I stood there awkwardly, wiping my damp palms on my faded apron, unsure whether I should run back down to the basement laundry room or wait for the axe to fall on me as well. After all, I was just a hired hand, an unverified outsider who had snuck hot food up to the master bedroom against estate policy.
"You," Lorenzo said, turning his sharp gaze onto me.
I flinched, my protective instincts flaring up. "I didn't steal anything, Mr. Moretti. I swear. I only brought him extra blankets and warm soup because—"
"Because everyone else here is a monster," Lorenzo interrupted, his tone unreadable. He stepped closer, towering over me. Up close, his resemblance to Giovanni was striking—the same razor-sharp jawline, the same piercing, predatory intelligence in the eyes, though Lorenzo possessed the physical strength and unyielding mobility that his father had been robbed of. "What is your name?"
"Clara. Clara Hayes."
"Clara," he repeated, tasting the syllables as if evaluating a new business asset. He glanced down at my protruding stomach. "And how far along are you?"
"Six months."
"And they had you scrubbing marble floors on your knees?" A dark shadow crossed his face, a muscle ticking violently along his jaw. He looked back at his father, who was still slumped in the wheelchair, breathing heavily from the exertion of his historic movement, but watching us with an expression of intense, paternal satisfaction.
"My father hasn't moved a muscle in five thousand four hundred and seventy-five days," Lorenzo said softly, walking over to the wheelchair and resting a large, warm hand on the old man’s frail shoulder. Giovanni didn't flinch away the way he usually did with everyone else; instead, a faint, ghost-like tremor passed through his frame as he leaned imperceptibly into his son's touch. "The medical board said his brain was trapped behind a wall of scar tissue. Total locked-in syndrome. No recovery possible."
Lorenzo turned back to me, his eyes locking onto mine with terrifying intensity. "Yet, the moment I walk through that door after five years abroad, he doesn't greet me. He doesn't ask about the empire, or the stocks, or the hostile takeovers. He points at you. And he points at your bruises. Why?"
I swallowed hard, feeling the weight of the old man’s secret pressing down on my chest. "Because... because we talked."
Lorenzo raised a skeptical eyebrow. "Talked to a man who couldn't speak?"
"He couldn't speak, Mr. Moretti. But he could listen." I looked past Lorenzo to meet the old man's gaze. A soft, vulnerable warmth bloomed in my chest. "I told him about my baby. I told him about my dreams. And every night, when the house went quiet, he cried. I knew he was trapped inside his own head while these vultures treated him like trash. So I promised him... I promised him that we were going to survive this place together."
Silence stretched between us, thick and heavy. For a long moment, Lorenzo just stared at me, his brilliant mind clearly analyzing every word, every micro-expression, searching for deception. Then, slowly, a strange expression crossed his hardened features—something dangerously close to respect.
"Viktor!" Lorenzo called out sharply.
The head of security appeared instantly from the hallway.
"Move my father into the master suite on the ground floor immediately. Get the private medical team from Zurich on a private jet tonight." Lorenzo paused, his eyes shifting back to me. "And as for Clara... move her out of the servant quarters in the basement. Give her the guest suite next to the east library. And assign two guards to her door."

My jaw dropped. "Wait—Mr. Moretti, I'm just a maid! I can't stay in the guest suite—"
"You aren't a maid anymore, Clara," Lorenzo cut me off, a dangerous, thrilling smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. "Starting tonight, you are my father's personal scheduler and confidential companion. And trust me... you're going to help me tear this family apart from the inside out."
