Chapter 16 - The Gathering Storm

While the estate enjoyed a brief, hard-earned peace, the criminal underworld outside wasn't ready to let go so easily. Marcus Vance, currently rotting in a federal holding facility awaiting trial, had left behind a network of untraceable mercenaries and international fixers who considered a failed contract an unfinished debt.

At 3:00 AM, the estate's advanced perimeter security sensors blinked red.

Viktor strode into the ground-floor security command center, his face locked into an expression of grim, unyielding focus. He tapped the primary monitoring display, bringing up thermal imaging feeds from the outer perimeter gate.

"Mr. Moretti," Viktor called out sharply.

Lorenzo, who had been quietly reviewing the historical archives with me in the library, immediately stood up, his tactical instincts kicking in instantly. He drew his Sig Sauer pistol, checking the chamber with a crisp, mechanical slide-click.

"What do we have, Viktor?" Lorenzo asked, walking into the command room.

"It’s not Marcus’s men," Viktor replied, zooming in on the thermal feed. "It’s professional contract extraction units. Four individuals, highly trained, carrying specialized thermal-breaching gear. They aren't trying to blow the house up this time. They’re executing a silent extraction—or assassination."

I stepped into the room, feeling a cold shiver run down my spine. "An assassination? But why? Marcus is locked up. Who could possibly be paying them?"

"Aurelia’s secondary offshore accounts," Lorenzo realized instantly, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle ticked violently. "We froze her primary Swiss trusts, but she had a secret contingency fund managed by an overseas syndicate known as the Viper Network. If they eliminate us, the trust automatically executes in favor of their surviving syndicate members."

Giovanni rolled his wheelchair into the command room, his face set in stone. He pointed a steady finger toward the panic room corridor, signaling us to move immediately.

"No," Lorenzo said firmly, looking directly at his father and then at me. "We aren't running into a cage this time. We’re going to meet them at the front gate."
