Chapter 9 - The Final Trap

Deep within the subterranean service tunnels of the Moretti mansion, the air was cold, damp, and smelled of ancient stone and damp earth. We hurried through the narrow corridors until we reached the reinforced steel door of the panic room, where Viktor and Giovanni were waiting.
Viktor quickly unbolted the door from the inside, pulling us safely inside the high-tech sanctuary. Monitored screens covered one entire wall, displaying live feeds from hidden security cameras throughout the entire estate.
"Status?" Lorenzo asked immediately, breathing heavily.
"They’re searching the east library now," Viktor reported, pointing to a screen showing Marcus Vance and his three remaining guards kicking furniture over in blind rage. "They're getting desperate. If they don't find us in ten minutes, they’ll start planting C4 charges to blow the structural columns of the mansion."
I stared at the monitor, watching Marcus Vance’s twisted, furious face on the screen. Then, an audacious, brilliant idea sparked in my mind.
"Let them plant the charges," I said quietly.
Lorenzo and Viktor both turned to look at me in absolute disbelief.
"Clara, have you lost your mind?" Lorenzo asked. "If they blow the columns, this entire house comes down on top of us."
"Not if we trap them in the old wine cellar first," I countered, pointing to the architectural blueprint layout displayed on the auxiliary tablet. "Look at the master ventilation and pneumatic locking system installed during the Cold War. If we trigger the blast doors in the west corridor, it seals the entire wine cellar and the lower east wing into an airtight, bomb-proof vault. Any explosives they set inside won't destroy the mansion—the blast will be entirely contained downward."
Lorenzo stared at the blueprint, his brilliant analytical mind processing the tactical geometry in a matter of seconds. A slow, lethal grin spread across his face.
"My god, Clara," Lorenzo breathed, looking at me with undisguised adoration. "You’re a tactical genius."
"I just want my daughter to grow up in a world without monsters," I replied simply.
"Viktor," Lorenzo ordered crisply. "Manual override on the west wing pneumatic locks. Now."
Viktor’s fingers flew across the console. Clack-whirrr.
Downstairs, the heavy, industrial steel blast doors dropped simultaneously with the sound of a guillotine blade, sealing Marcus Vance and his remaining men inside the reinforced concrete wine cellar just as they were planting their C4 charges against the inner vault wall.
On the security monitor, we watched in absolute silence as Marcus realized he was trapped. He screamed, hammering his fists against the four-inch-thick steel door, just as the remote detonator he was holding accidentally triggered the explosives inside the confined, sealed space.

A dull, heavy THUD vibrated through the foundation of the earth beneath us, followed by absolute, echoing silence.
Marcus Vance and his men weren't dead—the vault was structurally indestructible—but they were thoroughly trapped, buried under tons of rubble with no exit, no phone service, and no way out until the federal authorities arrived to pick them up like gift-wrapped criminals.
