Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The sound of Giovanni’s voice hung in the frigid air of the dining hall, a terrifying ghost from the past reclaimed. Mrs. Gable stared at him in abject horror, her mouth opening and closing like a fish stranded on dry land. She realized then, with terrifying clarity, that her game was completely over. There were no more lies to spin, no more manipulations to weave, and no more hiding behind Aurelia’s dead name.
"Viktor," Lorenzo said calmly, not taking his eyes off the cowering former housekeeper. "Take Martha and her little accomplices down to the security holding cells in the basement. Let them experience what a cold, locked room feels like without a blanket or a heater. We’ll let the federal authorities pick them up as soon as the blizzard clears."
"Gladly, sir," Viktor replied with a grim, satisfied smile.
The security guards moved in with clinical efficiency. Mrs. Gable didn't even fight back as she was hoisted to her feet; her spirit had been entirely crushed, her body going limp as she was dragged out of the room, her pathetic whimpers echoing down the grand hallway until the heavy oak doors clicked shut.
When the silence returned, Lorenzo let out a long, slow breath, running a hand through his dark hair. He walked over to his father, kneeling beside the wheelchair.
"You spoke," Lorenzo murmured, a rare, genuine note of awe in his voice. "Dad... you actually spoke."
Giovanni didn't smile, but a fierce, triumphant light flickered in his dark eyes. He slowly raised his hand, pointing a single, steady finger away from the doors and directly toward me, standing near the hearth. Then, he tapped his chest twice, and pointed at my protruding stomach.
Lorenzo stood up and walked over to where I was standing. The intense, predatory energy that defined him in the boardroom seemed to melt away, leaving something remarkably tender and human in its wake.
"He’s telling you that you saved his life," Lorenzo said softly, stopping just a few inches away from me. "And I think... he’s trying to tell me that it’s time we started protecting yours, too."
I looked down, feeling a blush warm my cheeks. "I was just doing what anyone should have done, Mr. Moretti."
"Stop calling me that," he murmured, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my breath hitch. "My name is Lorenzo."
Before I could process the sudden shift in the air between us, a sudden, violent crash echoed from the front entrance of the mansion, shattering the fragile peace of the morning.
We all froze.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Heavy, rhythmic blows pounded against the massive reinforced oak doors of the foyer, accompanied by the muffled sound of shouting engines outside.
Viktor came sprinting back into the dining hall, his pistol drawn and his face carved with absolute urgency.
"Mr. Moretti," Viktor shouted over the howling wind outside. "We’ve got company. Heavy perimeter breach."

Lorenzo’s expression hardened back into cold, lethal steel in a fraction of a second. "Who?"
"Marcus Vance," Viktor gasped. "Aurelia’s brother. And he brought a private militia with him."
